Congratulations to Professor Christopher Lynch who has been awarded a prestigious Honorary Fellowship from the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong
Professor Lynch was honoured at a recent conferring ceremony in Hong Kong on 17th November 2024.
The citation for Professor Christopher Lynch highlighted his “contributions to the fields of Restorative Dentistry and Dental Education have been exemplary and groundbreaking”.
Professor Christopher Lynch is Professor & Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Cork University Dental School & Hospital/ University College Cork. The College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong highlighted that “throughout his illustrious career, Professor Lynch has excelled in academia and demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities. As the Editor-in-Chief of the esteemed Journal of Dentistry since 2011, and as a Dean at the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland since 2023, he has showcased his commitment to advancing research and education in dentistry”.
Professor Lynch’s citation noted that in May 2023, Christopher was elected to Membership of the Royal Irish Academy. This is considered to be the highest academic honour in Ireland. Christopher is the third dentist to be achieve this distinction in the Academy’s 240 year history, and the first dentist to be admitted since 1940. As well as this, other achievements recognised included:
- Professor Lynch was awarded a Senior Doctorate (DDSc) by assessment from Cardiff University in 2019, understood to be the first such recognition for an Irish-based dentist.
- Professor Lynch was awarded a Principal Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy UK in 2019.
- In 2020, Professor Lynch became one of Ireland’s inaugural national Learning & Teaching Research Fellows.
- Professor Lynch received the Award of Excellence in Dental Education from the Association for Dental Education in Europe in 2014 - the premier European award in dental education.
- In July 2023, Professor Lynch received the prestigious international Ivar Mjör Award for Practice-Based Research from the Network for Practice-Based Research at the IADR. The award is made to recognize scientists who have made distinguished contributions to practice-based research on an international level.
The College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong also noted that “Professor Lynch's involvement in various specialist societies and royal colleges is a testament to his dedication to advancing dentistry globally. His editorial responsibilities and external examinerships further highlight his commitment to fostering excellence in dental education and research” and “His extensive publication record, research interests, and successful grant funding initiatives underscore his innovative approach to addressing critical issues in dental practice and education issues. His supervision of postgraduate students and recognition from his supervised students reflect his passion for mentoring and nurturing future leaders in the field”.
The CDSHK concluded: “May his continued dedication and passion for dentistry inspire generations to come”
